Over the mindless beeping from the machines around me, I glare hard at the human definition displayed on my computer screen.

Jerk—one who is cruel, rude, or dislikable.

So that’s what the female thinks of me? That I am the human equivalent to Koraxian garbage?

I lean back in my chair and breathe a deep sigh. I should care little about other people’s opinion of me, but Dawn is not any ordinary being. She’s my mate and her opinion means more than anyone I have known or ever will. The fact that I repulse her is unsatisfactory. Very much so.

“Why do you treat me this way?”

Her question has haunted me since the moment she uttered it. At first I had not been consciously aware of my treatment of her; it was all blindly done in an attempt to keep her a safe distance from me. But now it’s become impossible to have her absent from my side, let alone out of my sight.

She got herself almost killed.

Not only is her ineptness dangerous, but mating instincts have taken over my every rationale, every thought and desire, making it difficult for me to stay away from her. Even if by doing so protects her, I no longer have the will to do it.

I want her.

And I do not know how much longer I can continue restraining myself when there’s another male—her own kin, no less—sniffing around her. If he so much as touches her in an informal way, I’ll want to kill him.

“The human, Adam. How is his progress?” I ask my second, still glowering at the definition on my screen.

In my peripheral, Von turns in his seat to look at me. “Satisfactory, sir. He completed the first phase of his training. His skills in combat are more than sufficient and he shows great promise in Koraxian weaponry. If he continues the way he has, I see no reason for him to remain on the ship when we land.”

I cock my head to the side, narrowing my eyes on the warrior. “You believe the male to be ready so soon?”

Unlike Koraxian warriors, the human has no superior senses or capabilities. If anything, I had expected Von to report that Adam failed phase one, not passed on to the next. Are humans stronger than I thought? To have survived the destruction of their planet shows strength, but when matched against a Koraxian, are they superior? The prospect of Dawn choosing him over me is incomprehensible.

Von approaches the console table and draws up a security feed. “He is currently training in the holodeck as we speak. See his progress for yourself, sir.”

Not one, but two humans materialise on the transmission screen.

I lean forward in my chair and zero in on the footage, my nostrils flaring. With his arms wrapped tightly around her, Adam redirects my mate’s focus to the target darting across the holodeck. His hand gliding down her arm to her waist accelerates my pulse, and I grip the armrests with intense pressure as I grind my teeth.
